The most common materials for dental veneers are:
- Dental ceramics, such as porcelain or zirconium dioxide, are colored in the color of the surrounding teeth.
- Silver colored metal alloys usually made from base metals (usually used in NHS crowns)
- A combination of the above with a ceramic alloy with an internal metal crown (known as metal-ceramic crowns or PFM crowns).
- Gold alloys that are sometimes chosen for their distinctive appearance. However, such materials are not considered modern and have not been used in world practice for a long time.
Zirconium (zirconium dioxide) crowns
Zirconium crowns are 3D computer-modeled orthopedic structures obtained from the mineral zirconium with an admixture of yttrium and aluminum, which began to be used in dental prosthetics relatively recently – about 15 years ago. Crowns made of this material are bright white in color and have high strength. However, an allergic reaction to gold, chrome-nickel and nickel is possible. Under the influence of saliva, the metal can oxidize and later on the crown a black ring of oxide may appear near the base.
Metal-ceramic crowns
A metal-ceramic crown consists of a metal that repeats the shape of the bone formation and an external ceramic coating that imitates the shape of the tooth. Metal ceramics are most often placed on chewing teeth.
Plastic crowns
Plastic crowns are inexpensive and are usually a temporary solution if you are currently struggling financially. The service life of such products is about 3 years. And that’s all you need to know about plastics.
Ceramic crowns
Ceramic crowns are made in a laboratory and built up layer by layer. This gives them the same slightly translucent appearance as natural teeth and makes them a popular choice for front teeth that are always visible. The disadvantage of any ceramic material is that, although it is very strong, it is more fragile than metal. Therefore, porcelain crowns are more prone to cracking or chipping and may need to be replaced sooner than you expect.
Telescopic crowns
In fact, it is a telescopic prosthesis – a removable bridge that can be a suitable alternative to dental implants or a dental bridge. It is used to replace missing teeth without surgery, such as implant placement, bone grafting, or gum grafting.
