Areas of Expertise

Oncological surgery

Our department specializes in the surgical treatment of cancer. Cancer is a complex disease that requires a multidisciplinary approach, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, and pathology, both in the diagnostic phase and during treatment. In addition to surgical tumor removal, oncologic surgeons perform palliative surgeries aimed at pain control, improving the quality of life for patients, and managing symptoms and side effects associated with cancer. Oncologic surgeons are involved not only in treatment but also in the diagnosis of cancers, which, if detected early, can be completely cured. Cancer surgeries should be performed by surgeons who have specialized expertise in this field. Research shows that surgical treatment performed by experienced oncological surgeons using a multidisciplinary approach improves patient survival and quality of life. In our general surgery department, surgical oncology specialists treat tumors of the breast and thyroid, stomach, pancreas, large intestine, and rectum using modern techniques such as laparoscopic and oncoplastic surgeries.

The department assesses the condition of incoming patients, who are examined by specialists and academic staff after undergoing necessary tests and examinations (such as ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans). If needed, hospitalization is available for further treatment.

Obesity and Bariatric Surgery

What Methods Are Used in Obesity Surgery?

Restrictive Methods

These methods reduce the volume or capacity of the stomach, thereby limiting calorie intake and ensuring early satiety. They include Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB), Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG), Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), and Gastric Balloon.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

This is a surgical method for treating obesity, used for individuals with comorbidities or patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher. During the procedure, 85% of the stomach is removed, and the remaining portion is reshaped into a tube-like structure. The primary goal of this surgery is to limit the amount of food the stomach can hold.

However, sleeve gastrectomy alone is not a weight-loss method. Postoperative patients must follow a strict diet and exercise program. If they adhere to the prescribed lifestyle changes, they can lose 65-80% of their excess weight within the first year.

Gastric Balloon

The gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss method for overweight patients. This procedure involves inserting an air-filled balloon into the stomach via an endoscopic procedure, reducing the stomach’s available space and leading to earlier satiety.

However, patients cannot lose weight solely due to the gastric balloon. As with other bariatric methods, patients must follow an appropriate diet and exercise plan.

The gastric balloon procedure is performed under sedation in the endoscopy unit under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. The patient does not feel anything during the procedure and is discharged within 3-4 hours after the operation.

Malabsorptive Bariatric Methods

These methods reduce calorie intake by limiting nutrient flow and bypassing the absorption site. Examples include Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD) and Jejunoileal Bypass.

Combined Methods

These procedures both limit food intake and reduce absorption. Examples include Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) and Duodenal Switch (DS).

In addition to surgical intervention, successful results in obesity treatment can also be achieved with endoscopic methods. Patients concerned about the risks of surgery may prefer gastric balloon placement or endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty.

Gastric Bypass

Many methods are used in obesity surgery, but gastric bypass is the most common. It is widely used to treat obesity-related diseases, including Type 2 Diabetes.

Gastric bypass is a procedure that simultaneously limits food intake and prevents its absorption. Since the patient’s stomach volume is reduced after surgery, their desire to eat also decreases, making weight loss more manageable.

The training of maxillofacial surgeons primarily focuses on the hard (bones) and soft (skin, muscles) tissues of the face, mouth, and jaws. Their knowledge and surgical expertise make them highly specialized professionals qualified to diagnose and treat functional and aesthetic disorders in this anatomical area.

On April 27, 2026, my daughter (Elif Çelik Terzi) was admitted to Bağcılar Mega Medipol Hospital with a red code alert due to poisoning. We experienced significant difficulties with the hospital's relevant departments' response and information; or rather, it was insufficient. The staff was below average, unfortunately. Up to this point, we managed to get through the situation somehow. Due to the urgency of her condition, initial treatment was given, and it was decided that she should be admitted to the intensive care unit. Everything proceeded normally up to this point. We've been here for almost 24 hours, our mental state is already bad, and it's perfectly natural that we want to wait for hours to see that our child is okay. At that point, we encountered an insensitive and empathy-lacking security barrier. I say this because it's upsetting that we weren't allowed in despite having received approval. As a mother, if I want to see him, his wife, his brother, his aunt – that's perfectly natural, I think. When I asked, they said, "Let two people see him for a very short time, take time from ours so the other two can see him too." Unfortunately, in return, we were treated as if we were asking for entry to the Pentagon. Everyone kept waiting, and there was no answer. When I finally got inside, even though I received approval from the staff inside, we were stopped by the generally overly loyal and empathy-lacking security outside. As a family, we wondered why such unqualified staff are working in such a high-quality hospital. At the end of the day, why do we choose private hospitals? If we receive the same treatment as in a state hospital, where is the difference? And we paid a fortune for this. In short, this is what it means to be humiliated despite paying for your services. I will also find out the name of this security guard and write it down, and I will have everyone I know, my friends and family, write complaint emails until I get a response from you. Perhaps you will take these complaints into consideration and hire more qualified personnel. Gülizar Çelik. Translated fromTurkish

I would like to express my gratitude once again, in your presence, to our esteemed professor, Mr. Mustafa Fatih Daşcı, from the Orthopedics Department. I underwent a challenging surgical procedure, but thanks to his support, the pre-operative examination, the surgery itself, and the post-operative process went very smoothly. My encounter with him was purely coincidental; I came across him on Instagram. I'm so glad we did. May God bless him. Translated fromTurkish

Today, my 6-year-old nephew received a court summons from Medipol Hospital. They've sued my 6-year-old nephew, apparently for a 2000 TL examination fee. They've tried calling but couldn't reach him because he doesn't have a phone. Supposedly, Medipol, a huge hospital, couldn't collect this 2000 TL examination fee from my 6-year-old nephew and has sued the child himself. We're investigating, but no one has contacted his parents. Who did you try to reach if there was such a debt? Even if there was a debt, send it in the name of his parents, but what does it mean to sue a 6-year-old child? A huge hospital suing a 6-year-old child? It's unbelievable, but it's true. On April 24, 2026, I had an examination with Dr. Esra in the Dermatology department. However, the staff at the reception desk told me before the examination that my contracted institution was valid, So I had the examination… During the examination, the doctor asked about my complaints, I explained them one by one, She used the following sentences to me, “You have alopecia areata on your scalp, and you have sensitivity to water in your hands and nails, However, the most accurate result will be determined by the tests, I had the tests done in the internal medicine department, She said let's wait for the results and my examination ended. Later, when I went to the reception desk, the staff there asked me for payment, When I asked why, they said that the doctor had made the diagnosis and that my insurance did not cover this diagnosis. I objected to the situation. I stated that I wanted to speak with the doctor. However, she didn't even let me in. She sent a message through her assistant from the door. She said she couldn't see me, madam... Now I ask you, What diagnosis was given to me before my test results came out? I'm curious... I demand a refund of the fee I paid and I want to remind you that you owe me an apology... Ayşegül Serhatoğlu Translated fromTurkish

This is a complete disgrace. On Monday, they sent us away after taking X-rays, saying there was no fracture in my broken nose, and told us to come back in 3 days. When we went to a doctor named Hande 3 days later, we were practically scolded. They said there was a fracture again, but there was nothing they could do, and sent us away. Today, at another hospital, we learned that there are fractures in two places, and they treated us. We were humiliated here despite paying for our own treatment. I will write about this everywhere. Honestly, the hospital's prices are very high and ill-considered; it's clear they're driven by greed and a desire to show off. On April 20, 2026, we made an appointment with cardiologist Dr. Beytullah Çakal. Upon arriving at the hospital, we were met by assistant doctor Atakan instead of Dr. Beytullah. Dr. Atakan's attitude and speech were very unpleasant; he disregarded patient rights, lacked manners, and examined us in a scolding manner. I explained this problem to the staff at the reception desk. I told them I had come for Dr. Beytullah but had encountered a different doctor. They directed me to patient rights. I explained to Ms. İlayda that we had been examined by a different doctor and requested a refund. Ms. İlayda, with the same attitude as Dr. Atakan, said that a refund was not possible and asked why we hadn't left the room when we saw the other doctor. We explained that we should empathize, that we had paid for a specialist doctor, but had been examined by an assistant doctor whose name wasn't even on the official website, and that we had been scolded on top of that. Unfortunately, Ms. İlayda did not give us a satisfactory answer. [The record is with Dr. Beytullah] They stated that the case was opened in Bey's name and that a refund was not possible. We left the hospital quite dissatisfied with this situation. I would like to state that I will complain about this situation through CİMER (Turkish Presidential Complaint System) and initiate legal proceedings. Note: Specialist doctor's consultation fee: 3250 TL Assistant doctor's consultation fee: 2000 TL If an assistant doctor is going to examine me, why am I paying 1250 TL extra?! Hello, our story is a bit long. On February 10, 2026, my father, Fuat Tezcan, was diagnosed with SCC (Scrotal Sclerosing Cholesterol). During a PET scan, spots were also seen in his intestines (he has Crohn's disease). We immediately made an appointment with Dr. Esin, and on February 24, 2026, he underwent a colonoscopy under anesthesia. On February 24, 2026, the nurse who took blood from his hands for the anesthesia procedures (I apologize for not asking her name, we overlooked it due to the panic surrounding the SCC) told us that there were red spots on his hands, which we hadn't noticed at all. We had our colonoscopy, and the results came back clear. We immediately made an appointment with a dermatologist, and our doctor said that the red spots on his hands were precancerous and that a treatment plan needed to be developed. Your nurse saved a person's life; may God bless that nurse a thousand times over. What attentiveness, what awareness! I thank her not once, but hundreds of times. February 24, 2026. Many thanks to all the Gastroenterology nurses. 🌸🌸🌸 Translated fromTurkish

My child was born here. Dr. Nagihan Kaya took excellent care of us from the beginning, and thanks to her, my wife had a healthy delivery. Likewise, everyone in the delivery room, from the cleaning staff to the midwives and nurses, was empathetic and friendly. We are very pleased with Dr. Fatih Yüksel in the pediatric department; his care and attention are excellent. However, I unfortunately cannot say the same for the hospital as a whole. First of all, there's the elevator problem, which starts in the parking lot and continues inside the hospital. I'm not exaggerating, at least half an hour is wasted waiting in line for the elevator, not to mention the stress and anxiety. The common areas are extremely clean, and the toilets are hygienic. There's an amputee cat, a male in a tuxedo, near the cafes; he's very cute, if you happen to see him, be sure to pet him :) May God protect everyone from needing hospitals, and may He grant healing to everyone awaiting it.
