Areas of Expertise

Oncological surgery

Our department specializes in the surgical treatment of cancer. Cancer is a complex disease that requires a multidisciplinary approach, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, and pathology, both in the diagnostic phase and during treatment. In addition to surgical tumor removal, oncologic surgeons perform palliative surgeries aimed at pain control, improving the quality of life for patients, and managing symptoms and side effects associated with cancer. Oncologic surgeons are involved not only in treatment but also in the diagnosis of cancers, which, if detected early, can be completely cured. Cancer surgeries should be performed by surgeons who have specialized expertise in this field. Research shows that surgical treatment performed by experienced oncological surgeons using a multidisciplinary approach improves patient survival and quality of life. In our general surgery department, surgical oncology specialists treat tumors of the breast and thyroid, stomach, pancreas, large intestine, and rectum using modern techniques such as laparoscopic and oncoplastic surgeries.

Obesity and Bariatric Surgery

What Methods Are Used in Obesity Surgery?

Restrictive Methods

These methods reduce the volume or capacity of the stomach, thereby limiting calorie intake and ensuring early satiety. They include Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB), Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG), Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), and Gastric Balloon.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

This is a surgical method for treating obesity, used for individuals with comorbidities or patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher. During the procedure, 85% of the stomach is removed, and the remaining portion is reshaped into a tube-like structure. The primary goal of this surgery is to limit the amount of food the stomach can hold.

However, sleeve gastrectomy alone is not a weight-loss method. Postoperative patients must follow a strict diet and exercise program. If they adhere to the prescribed lifestyle changes, they can lose 65-80% of their excess weight within the first year.

Gastric Balloon

The gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss method for overweight patients. This procedure involves inserting an air-filled balloon into the stomach via an endoscopic procedure, reducing the stomach’s available space and leading to earlier satiety.

However, patients cannot lose weight solely due to the gastric balloon. As with other bariatric methods, patients must follow an appropriate diet and exercise plan.

The gastric balloon procedure is performed under sedation in the endoscopy unit under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. The patient does not feel anything during the procedure and is discharged within 3-4 hours after the operation.

Malabsorptive Bariatric Methods

These methods reduce calorie intake by limiting nutrient flow and bypassing the absorption site. Examples include Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD) and Jejunoileal Bypass.

Combined Methods

These procedures both limit food intake and reduce absorption. Examples include Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) and Duodenal Switch (DS).

In addition to surgical intervention, successful results in obesity treatment can also be achieved with endoscopic methods. Patients concerned about the risks of surgery may prefer gastric balloon placement or endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty.

Gastric Bypass

Many methods are used in obesity surgery, but gastric bypass is the most common. It is widely used to treat obesity-related diseases, including Type 2 Diabetes.

Gastric bypass is a procedure that simultaneously limits food intake and prevents its absorption. Since the patient’s stomach volume is reduced after surgery, their desire to eat also decreases, making weight loss more manageable.

The training of maxillofacial surgeons primarily focuses on the hard (bones) and soft (skin, muscles) tissues of the face, mouth, and jaws. Their knowledge and surgical expertise make them highly specialized professionals qualified to diagnose and treat functional and aesthetic disorders in this anatomical area.

Instead of giving an IV drip at the emergency room, they prescribe an injection because they can't charge for inpatient treatment, and the fee is 420 TL. 🤦‍♂️ We are going through difficult times as a country, and it seems even more difficult times await us. If I'm wrong, I would appreciate it if the authorities would enlighten us. Translated fromTurkish

I went there sick at 4 am. I paid 13,000 lira for two IVs. If I had recovered, that would have been one thing, but a few hours later I felt bad again. And the ignorant doctor there tried to give me a completely different diagnosis. I went to Biruni Hospital in Küçükçekmece. That helped. Translated fromTurkish

My mother was brought to Medipol Mega Hospital by a 112 Emergency ambulance. We were informed that she was admitted through the yellow zone, that tests revealed a fracture in her knee, and that she was therefore transferred to the red zone. Despite this, we were extremely disturbed by the fact that a fee was demanded for her leg to be put in a cast, and that the procedure could not be performed without payment. Demanding payment in this manner from a patient brought in by ambulance and diagnosed with a fracture within the emergency department raises serious questions regarding both ethics and patient rights. Even more upsetting is that the epicrisis report issued after the casting procedure states "not assessed as red zone." However, the hospital clearly stated that my mother was admitted to the red zone. This situation raises serious suspicions that the case assessment may have been misrepresented solely to justify demanding payment. It is extremely upsetting to see people being victimized in such a sensitive matter as health. On behalf of my mother, I request an impartial investigation of this situation, an explanation, and a prompt response. Otherwise, I would like to state that I will report the matter to the relevant official authorities and request that the necessary investigation be initiated. Translated fromTurkish

Ceyda Sarı, a so-called dentist, said my disabled son's front tooth broke. I referred them from Bahçelievler Medipol to Bağcılar. They said they would perform surgery because he is disabled, and that they needed anesthesia. I agreed. Then they said his baby teeth were also growing crooked and that they should extract those as well. They asked for 150,000. I said, "Just do the front one, so the child doesn't suffer too much." I said, "Just do the front one, that's enough." Then they lowered the price to 70,000. I agreed. The child was in surgery for 6 hours. A week later, the tooth fell out. We went to the hospital, and they didn't even care. When I asked Ceyda Sarı, who supposedly considers herself a doctor, she said, "If it were my child, I wouldn't do it for now, let it stay like that." She said she wouldn't give him anesthesia again. Money is not important; this child is disabled. I hope Ceyda Sarı, the dentist who kept him in surgery for six hours and didn't do her job properly, gets what's coming to her. Translated fromTurkish

It was one of the most indifferent hospitals I've ever been to, with different procedures applied in each department. So, if you have private insurance, you can access some departments, but not others. Again, don't rely on having SGK (Turkish Social Security Institution) insurance; you need to thoroughly confirm it before going. I brought my daughter for a breast ultrasound due to her critical condition. After an examination in general surgery, they referred her to the ultrasound department. However, even though it was very early, there was no authorized person to perform the ultrasound. To buy time, they called someone from another department. As a result, two days passed, and they didn't get back to me until I called. When I called to request the results, they said the doctor wanted to examine her again. And they didn't inform us of this until I called... It's like they're making a mockery of our health in such a critical situation. I made appointments with multiple departments, but I won't even mention how the information given over the phone differed from the procedures encountered upon arrival… Translated fromTurkish

My experience with Medipol was extremely disappointing and far below the standards one would expect from a hospital that promotes itself as an international medical destination. The problems started even before I arrived in Turkey. My surgery was originally scheduled for a specific date, but the hospital later changed it after I had already purchased my flight tickets. Because of this change, I had to modify the flights for both myself and my companion, which cost me €266 in additional airline fees. While the hospital acknowledged the inconvenience and reduced the procedure price by €200, the situation was still caused by their scheduling change. Unfortunately, the payment situation made things even worse. After everything was finished, I ended up paying around 10% more because of the exchange rate applied when paying by card. No one informed me in advance that paying by card would result in such a significant increase or that it would be much better to bring cash and pay in local currency to avoid these extra charges. If I had been properly informed, I would have exchanged euros into Turkish lira in my own country and paid in cash. Because of this lack of transparency, the final cost of my procedure ended up being around €400 higher than the price originally agreed. The organization during my stay was also very poor. Airport transfers were never on time — every transfer from the airport to the hotel was delayed by more than an hour. After a long international trip, patients should not be left waiting like this without proper communication. The same lack of coordination continued at the hospital. I had a scheduled appointment for washing at 13:00, yet after arriving we were left waiting for about 30 minutes before anyone called us. Eventually we were simply told to “go for a walk because it might take time,” which is not how patients with scheduled medical appointments should be treated. Communication throughout the entire process was extremely difficult. Many staff members, including drivers and reception staff, did not speak English. For a hospital that actively attracts international patients, this is very surprising and unprofessional. There was also confusion about the aftercare products that were supposed to be included. According to the offer I received, post-procedure care products were part of the package. However, when it was time for the first wash, no one had provided the shampoo or foam that were required. I had to raise the issue myself before anything was addressed. Overall, the biggest problem was the clear lack of organization and internal communication. Different staff members seemed unaware of schedules, procedures, and what had been promised to the patient. The entire experience felt chaotic and unnecessarily stressful. Traveling to another country for a medical procedure requires trust in the hospital’s professionalism, transparency, and organization. Unfortunately, my experience did not reflect those expectations. I sincerely hope the medical result of the procedure will be successful, because the overall patient experience was frustrating, poorly organized, and far below what a hospital of this size claims to provide.

COMPLAINT LETTER

I don't usually prefer writing complaints; however, this hospital's past and present experiences have finally made me say "enough is enough."

Previously, I had decided against this hospital, despite it being very close to my home, due to diagnoses and treatments that were not covered by insurance, unnecessary test requests, and a feeling of a commercial rather than a healthcare-oriented approach.

However, last night I went there for a simple procedure like getting an IV drip for the flu, and I regretted it again.

When we entered the emergency room, the inexperienced team that greeted us continued talking amongst themselves without even looking at us. Without being asked about my complaint, they said things like, "Let's send them to Internal Medicine, they're hospitalized there." This approach was both indifferent and extremely unprofessional.

In the Internal Medicine department, after blood tests were done, an IV drip was administered. However, the atmosphere resembled a high school cafeteria rather than a healthcare facility, due to the staff chatting loudly and laughing outside the door. After we told them 15 minutes later that the IV drip wasn't flowing, they came to check; they said it was off, turned it on, and left. After that, no one checked if the IV drip was finished; we had to inform them every time. I felt ashamed that these people are supposed to be healthcare workers and the bright face of this country.

We patiently completed the whole process and returned home. However, the next day, when my wife went to the pharmacy to get the medication, it wasn't given because I was listed as hospitalized in the system. I don't believe this is a mistake.

I had to call the hospital four times to correct the situation. The first call was disconnected. The second call said that they couldn't reach internal medicine either. The third call was disconnected again. After explaining the situation more forcefully on the fourth call, the problem was resolved within 15 minutes.

Having to go through so much communication and follow-up for a simple IV drip is extremely stressful.

Furthermore, I have previously encountered situations such as:
• Unnecessary delays in the pre-authorization processes,
• Irrelevant test requests,
• Attempts to perform procedures with diagnoses that the insurance company would not approve.

I have never had a problem-free experience with this hospital.

I would advise anyone who values their health and budget to think twice before applying to this institution. Translated fromTurkish

Today I had an appointment with the cardiology department at least 4 days in advance. But when I went to the hospital, they said that the supplementary insurance company couldn't provide the pre-authorization right now due to a system problem, and that this problem had been ongoing for 2 days. I went there while fasting during Ramadan, I took time off from work, I wasted fuel driving my car, and during this time I received no information whatsoever. Their solution was to pay 8000 TL to the Social Security Institution (SGK), and then they would refund it when the pre-authorization was issued. They don't trust you; they want payment first. I called the supplementary insurance company, and they said there's no problem, and that a solution could be found over the phone, verbally. But the hospital doesn't accept this either, and it's clear the problem lies with the hospital. So we went to the patient rights department, but their solution was also that the money had to be paid, and for some reason, no official would even speak to us. Apparently, the system works if you have regular, non-supplementary insurance, how interesting, but it doesn't work if you have supplementary insurance 😀. I wasted my entire day without an examination, and wasted fuel on top of that, it was a terrible day. Meanwhile, we almost paid the parking fee too, 150 TL for 1 to 2 hours, at least we arrived at the last minute and didn't have to pay the parking fee. What more can we say... I can't write anything about the doctor because we didn't even see him...

The hospital management can't say: "Maybe you came unprepared, it's our fault, we didn't inform you, we apologize, please get all your examinations and tests done, we'll get a signed document from you, and send us the provision fee when our system problem is resolved."
Anyone who wants to can find a solution. Translated fromTurkish

My experience at this hospital resulted in complete regret and financial loss. I warn those considering going there to protect their budgets and insurance limits.

The summary of the process is as follows:

Financial Loss: I paid a total of 107,000 TL. My entire outpatient treatment limit was completely exhausted during this process.

Unnecessary Tests: When I took the results of the tests that the doctor himself requested, he said, "There's no need to look at these" for some of them. Why were tests that were unnecessary and had no medical basis requested in the first place and made me pay for them?

For some screening results, they said "inconclusive" and asked me to repeat them after 3 months. Instead of making a clear diagnosis in a process that cost 107,000 TL, the process is being delayed.

Tragicomical Outcome: After all those expensive tests and screenings, the doctor's only advice was, "Your vitamin D is low, raise it and we'll check again." Was it really necessary to exhaust all my insurance limits and spend 107,000 TL just to understand my vitamin D deficiency?

I saw a commercial approach rather than a healthcare service. I don't know whether to be upset about the fact that the radioactive scans yielded no results, the money I spent, my exhausted insurance limit, or my wasted time. I definitely do not recommend it! Translated fromTurkish

We have been coming to this hospital as a family for years, but for the last few months, regardless of whether it's an outpatient clinic or not, we've been encountering problems like appointments piled up at the same time, inpatient and outpatient appointments clashing, as if we have nothing else to do. We wait for hours at every appointment. Their systems are very slow; getting insurance approval takes over 30 minutes. The caregivers and nurses forget that this is a hospital and spray on cheap, fake perfumes... nobody cares about allergy sufferers. This is a hospital! I won't even mention the emergency room; they direct you from one place to another in your sick state, you have to get your ID from upstairs and come back down to the emergency room, etc. In short, neither I, nor my family, nor my friends will ever set foot here again.
